The first in an occasional series of posts examining each card in detail. Why not collect all 47?
The Seven of Clubs
Oceans is not a card that usually generates much excitement, either nestling in the pocket or laying exposed upon the board. This can lead to beginners overlooking this card's potential as a lever that can be inserted into the crack in your opponent's table armour.
Let's say you're in the ease-out with two gobstoppers and the board is showing no paint, just charcoal and cherries. The table checks. Now the turn comes and it's the oceans. If it's all checked to you then you can toss in the standard bagatelle bet and leave your enemies sitting in their pots. They can't raise without risking you waving your candy in their faces and they're never going to call. Folding is now the only sensible move - your play has got them to munch their lunch.
Next time, how to batter ladies with a small club.
